3D scanning guide

Choosing a 3D scanner

How do I choose a 3D scanner?

Start with the size of what you scan, the detail you need and your budget. Handheld scanners like the 3DMakerpro Moose and Fox and the Creality Ferret and Otter models suit small to medium objects such as parts, figures and props. The Creality Raptor family covers medium and large objects. The Sermoon X1 and S1 aim at industrial precision work. For rooms and very large subjects, the 3DMakerpro Raven is a handheld LiDAR with a 50 m radius. If you are new to scanning, an entry-level model like the Ferret SE or Fox is the easiest way to learn the workflow.

Can I 3D print straight from a scan?

Not quite. A scan gives you a mesh, and meshes usually need a little cleanup first: fill holes, remove stray noise and make the model watertight. After that it prints like any other model: export it, slice it in Bambu Studio or your slicer, and print. Each product page lists the scanner's software and export formats.

How accurate are these scanners?

The accuracy figures on each page are the manufacturer's, for example 0.03 mm for the 3DMakerpro Moose, 0.05 mm for the Creality Otter Lite and 0.02 mm for the Sermoon X1. Real results depend on the object, the lighting and how steadily you move the scanner. Shiny, black and transparent surfaces scan poorly; a light coat of matte scanning spray fixes most of them.

Can I scan large objects like a car, furniture or a room?

Yes, with a long-range scanner. The Creality Raptor, Raptor Pro and RaptorX are built for medium and large objects, and the 3DMakerpro Raven LiDAR reaches a 50 m radius, which suits rooms, vehicles and outdoor subjects. Close-range scanners like the Moose and Ferret are better for small parts where fine detail matters.

Does a 3D scanner work with my Bambu Lab printer?

Yes. A scanner does not connect to your printer. You scan, clean up the mesh on your computer, then send it to Bambu Studio like any other model. It works the same for any Bambu Lab printer, and also for the laser engravers and CNC routers in this section if you want to make something from a scan.

Is shipping free, and how long does it take?

Shipping is free on every 3D scanner, and most ship within 48 hours of your order. Returns and exchanges are covered in our return policy.
