Bambu Lab Maintenance Schedule: What to Clean, Lubricate and Replace on P1, X1 and A1 Printers
Bambu Lab printers need little maintenance, but they are not maintenance-free. The short version, using Bambu's own intervals: clean fans and the extruder weekly, check rods and the guide rail monthly, grease the Z lead screws every three months, check the filament cutter every 3 to 5 spools, and replace the PTFE tube when it shows wear. The schedule below covers the P1 series, the X1 series and the A1 series, and lists the parts you will want on the shelf.

Maintenance schedule at a glance
| Item | P1 and X1 series | A1 series | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fans | Weekly | Weekly | Blow out dust with compressed air, printer off. |
| Extruder gear | Weekly check | When cleaning does not fix feeding | Compressed air over the gear. Replace if worn. |
| X-axis carbon rods (P1/X1) or guide rail (A1) | Monthly | Monthly | Clean. Carbon rods take no grease; the A1 rail is cleaned and re-lubricated. |
| Y and Z linear rods | Monthly clean; anti-rust every 3 months. After every 5 spools of ABS/ASA | n/a | Isopropyl alcohol on a dust-free cloth; anti-rust oil on a cloth. |
| Z lead screws | Every 3 months | Every 3 months | Clean first, then a thin coat of grease. Wipe off excess. |
| Idler pulleys | Only if squeaking | Every 3 months | A little lubricating oil. Do not oil silent pulleys. |
| Hotend | When dirty or under-extruding; especially when changing filament type | Monthly | Clean the nozzle surface and do cold pulls if needed. |
| Filament cutter | Every 3 to 5 spools; 1 to 2 for abrasive CF/GF | Every 3 spools | Check the blade, replace if dull or chipped. |
| PTFE tube | Check after about 10 spools; about 5 if abrasive | Every 6 spools; every 2 for CF | Replace when worn. Wear raises feed resistance. |
| Nozzle wiper | Before each print | Check | Keep it free of debris and undamaged; replace if the PTFE side is worn. |
| Silicone sock | When worn or loose | When worn or loose | Swap for a new one. |
| Chamber camera, X1 LiDAR | When blurred; weekly if printing ABS. LiDAR every 3 to 5 days with ABS | n/a | Microfiber and isopropyl alcohol. |
Intervals are Bambu's recommendations, not guarantees. Printing abrasive or volatile filament shortens most of them.
P1 and X1 series
Do not grease the carbon rods. Bambu says the X-axis carbon rods need no lubrication, only periodic cleaning, and grease causes abnormal resistance. Clean them with isopropyl alcohol on a dust-free cloth. The three Z lead screws are the part that does need grease, every three months: clean them, apply a thin coat with the bed homed, move the bed down, apply another coat, home again and wipe off excess near the nuts. Bambu names lubricating greases such as BX-300/F as an option and says similar lubricants should work.
Extruder. Filament dust builds up on the extruder gear. Compressed air over the gear is the fastest clean, and a worn gear should be replaced. If you print carbon fiber or glass fiber at volume, the hardened steel extruder gear wears more slowly.
Hotend. Clean it, especially when changing from one filament type to another, and make sure it is straight. Bambu's cleaning routine is to remove the front cover and silicone sock, heat the nozzle to 200 °C, wipe the surface with a cloth or tweezers while wearing heat-resistant gloves, and do cold pulls to clear residue. When it will not recover, the replacement hotend is the repair, because the nozzle is part of the unit.
A1 and A1 Mini
The A1 uses a guide rail rather than carbon rods. Clean it monthly with tweezers and a dust-free cloth, then re-lubricate. The lead screws and idler pulleys both take grease or oil every three months. The A1 hotend is a quick-release design: monthly, remove the sock, take off the hotend and clean the contact area with a lint-free cloth dipped in alcohol. Bambu recommends checking the cutter blade every 3 spools and replacing the PTFE tube every 6 spools of PLA and similar filament, or every 2 spools of carbon fiber or other high-friction filament.
Parts to keep on hand
Listed for A1, A1 Mini, A2L, P1P, P1S, X1C, X1E and H2S.
Listed for P1P, P1S, X1C and X1E.
Official replacement; pair with PTFE tubing from the PTFE collection.
Also worth stocking: a spare hotend in the size you use most, a silicone sock from the hotend protection range, and the cleaning and maintenance tools. Check the compatibility badge for your exact model on each product page.
H2, P2S, X2D, A2L and the AMS
Newer models have their own periodic maintenance pages on Bambu's wiki, and the AMS has a separate recommendation. The routines are broadly similar: keep fans, rails and the extruder clean, and watch the cutter and PTFE for wear. Use the model-specific page for intervals rather than the P1/X1 table above. They are listed in Bambu's maintenance index.
FAQ
Do Bambu Lab carbon rods need grease?
No. Bambu says the X-axis carbon rods need no lubrication and that grease makes them harder to clean. Clean them with isopropyl alcohol and a dust-free cloth.
How often should I grease the Z lead screws?
Every three months on P1, X1 and A1 series printers, after cleaning off dust and plastic particles.
How often should I replace the PTFE tube?
When it shows wear. On P1 series printers Bambu suggests checking after about 10 spools of normal filament or about 5 of abrasive filament. On the A1 it suggests every 6 spools, or every 2 for carbon fiber.
When should I change the filament cutter blade?
Check it every 3 to 5 spools of PLA, PETG, ABS or PC, and after 1 to 2 spools of abrasive CF or GF. If AMS retractions start failing, replace the blade. Bambu observed blades going dull after roughly 5,000 to 7,000 cuts.
Is isopropyl alcohol safe to use on the printer?
Bambu uses it for rods, cameras and LiDAR. For a textured PEI build plate it recommends dish detergent instead; see our build plate guide.
